Lancing shoppers to receive free ‘bag for life’
Asda is opening in Lancing on Tuesday 11th August with a £800,000 new store on South Street and, to celebrate, the supermarket is helping save customers money on the cost of going green by giving away 20,000 bags for life.
The bags will be available during the first week of opening and will help ensure the new store can encourage customers to reduce plastic bag consumption in the Town.
Store manager, Jason Howell, commented: “One of the biggest issues for store managers like myself is how do we cut down on the number of plastic bags used, in a way that encourages rather than lectures our customers. As a store, we’ve thought long and hard about this and that’s why I’m delighted to be able to exclusively reveal that for the first week of opening, bags for life will be free for all our customers in Lancing.”
Jason added: “After the opening week, you’ll have to pay for them again but the idea is that, by then, people will already have their free bag and can re-use that one. And should your bag for life break, we’ll also replace it for free.”
At the moment, a staggering 11 billion plastic bags are used in the UK every week and each one can take hundreds of years to rot away in a landfill site.
Asda has set itself the target of sending zero waste to landfill by 2010; across all of the ASDA and George businesses, including its depots and offices too.
Asda has also been working with organisations such as WRAP to design-out unnecessary packaging; whilst the new store colleagues in Lancing have been trained on green energy saving measures like ensuring lights are switched off when they’re not being used.
