About 200 people turned up to the meeting regarding the Beach Green

The public put forward very good statements and questions, however the Council did not actually respond to many, despite cries from the residents of Lancing for them to do so.

After the public questions Councillor Tony Nicklen then addressed the Councillors in a so-called debate, where he and he alone went through what he felt were the pros and cons for each of the three options.  At the end of his speech, he then tabled the proposal to follow option 2 which was seconded by Councillor Kemp. No time was given for any other councillor to debate the options in open discussion before the proposal was raised, thus making the bid by Councillor Burt to put forward an opposite option for voting on invalid and not permitted.

This meant that no other proposals could be put forward for voting on, so the bottom line was “who ever got out of his or her seat first” could make a proposal which would have to be voted on by the Parish councillors.

The vote went 6 for and 6 against which meant that the chairperson Councillor Angela Mills had a casting vote, where she voted to support Option 2. It’s going to be very hard for her to face the residents in Lancing now, if the reaction from those attending is anything to go by.

The public attending were totally outraged and there were calls from many of the public for the Councillors to resign, and that it was a case of towing the party line and not voting for what the residents of Lancing really wanted.

Many local residents said they were so disappointed in the Councillors and that come the elections next May there is no way they would ever vote to support those currently elected.

It was felt by some residents that some councillors in favour of putting top soil on the Green, should have made themselves more well known in the whole community and been much more verbal in the council meetings voicing their objections openly when the green was being discussed.

It also seemed very strange that some councillors who over months and months have refused to declare an interest in the Green, decided to declare an interest after we complained to the Standards Board of England and have been requested to provide evidence of their actions.
